A Quick Guide to Quidditch

Quidditch is a sport from the Harry Potter series of books and movies. Wizards and witches compete on two separate teams. They fly around an arena on broomsticks and try to get a ball through the other team’s hoop. There are four balls used in the game; a quaffle, two bludgers, and a golden snitch. If a player throws a quaffle through the other team’s hoop, his or her team gets 10 points. The two black bludger balls fly through the air and try to hit the players so they fall off their broomsticks. One player on each team, called a Seeker, tries to catch the golden snitch. If they can do it, they score 150 points for their team and this ends the game.

There are seven players on each team; three chasers, two beaters, one keeper, and a seeker. The chasers try to catch a quaffle as it drops slowly to the ground. A chaser then tries to throw the quaffle through the other team’s hoop. The beaters hit the bludgers towards the other team.  They try to stop the bludgers from getting too close to their own team members. The keeper tries to keep the other team from scoring. They are much like goal keepers in football. Finally, the seeker’s only job is to get the golden snitch and win the game.

If you have magical powers, a flying broomstick, and a ticket to Hogwart’s School of Wizards, you might also get a chance to play it!
