Oxford University is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. There have been classes at Oxford since 1096. The university is officially called The University of Oxford, but is also known as Oxford University. Here are seven fascinating facts about this old and very famous university that you might not know!

 1.  Oxford University has had about 120 Olympic medal winners.

2.  26 British Prime Ministers have studied at Oxford University. Included in this list are Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, and David Cameron.

3.  The Hogwarts dining hall in the Harry Potter films was inspired by the Great Hall at Christ Church, Oxford University.

4.  The University of Cambridge was started by Oxford scholars.

5. Women were not allowed in the colleges at Oxford University until 1878.

6.  More than 30 international leaders have studied at Oxford University, including Bill Clinton, Benazir Bhutto, and Dr Manmohan Singh.

7.  Many famous poets and writers have also studied at this university. Included on this list are John Donne, Oscar Wilde, and Iris Murdoch.
