February Festivals

Snow Carving

February is one of the coldest months of the year in many countries.  That doesn’t stop people from having fun!  Here are five fun festivals that happen every February:

  1. Sapporo Snow Festival – The Sapporo Snow Festival takes place in the city of Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. The week-long festival has been held in Odori Park since 1950.  There are many beautiful snow and ice sculptures to see.

  1. Hong Kong Arts Festival – The Hong Kong Arts Festival often starts in February each year. It features performances from famous dance companies around the world.  You can also see many famous operas, plays, and symphonies. People can also meet with the performers and learn more about these arts.

  1. Rio Carnival – This is one of the most famous festivals in the world. Carnival is a huge street party in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For five days, people watch parades, dance, and have fun. Bands play music all night long in the streets and on the beach.

  1. Basant Pachami – This is a festival held every year in India and Nepal. There is a strong religious meaning to the festival although it is also tied to the beginning of spring.  People wear yellow to celebrate.  In some areas of the country, people fly big yellow kites.  This is very colorful, beautiful, and fun time to visit India and Nepal.

  1. The Berlin Film Festival – Since 1978, the city of Berlin has held a festival each February to celebrate the world’s film industry. Famous actors and directors attend the festival and upcoming movies are shown and talked about. Documentaries, short films, animation, and movies from all over the world are all featured at the festival. The Berlin Film Festival usually lasts about 10 days.
